Overview

Gastric balloon operation in Turkey is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that aims to reduce weight by entering a balloon, which reduces the amount of food eaten, which leads to weight loss.

There are three types of gastric balloon operation. The doctor determines the most appropriate type for the patient, depending on the size of the fat mass the patient suffers. They are as follows:

  • Orbera: It is a single balloon that is entered into the stomach and filled with saline.
  • Reshape: They are two balloons and are similar to Orbera.
  • Obalon: It is entered into the stomach by small capsules and filled with Nitrogen gas.

The balloon is left in the stomach for a period of six to nine months. The time is determined according to the patient’s weight.

Candidates for Gastric Balloon Operation

Many people suffer from obesity and wish to have a gastric balloon operation, but the gastric balloon operation does not fit everybody. Candidates for the procedure are listed below:

  1. A person who suffers from obesity and excess fat blocks.
  2. The fat mass index should range from 30 kg to 35 kg in the person who will undergo a gastric balloon operation.
  3. The person must be free of diseases that would hinder the gastric balloon operation, such as gastritis or stomach ulcers.
  4. The person who is due to undergo a gastric balloon operation must be older than 18 years old.
  5. People who have not undergone any sort of gastric or esophageal operations.

Pre- Gastric Balloon Operation Tips

There are some tips and procedures to follow before undergoing to gastric balloon operation, which is summarized as follows:

  1. Stop eating and fast for four hours before the gastric balloon operation.
  2. The person must inform the doctor of his/her medical history, whether they suffer from any particular disease or are taking certain medications.
  3. Making the necessary radiography to ensure the safety of the person, and that she/he is a proper candidate for gastric balloon operation.
  4. Avoid having any sort of blood thinners, such as vitamin combinations, alcohol, and green tea.
  5. Stop smoking for a week before undergoing the gastric balloon operation.

Post- Gastric Balloon Operation Tips

Some instructions are dictated by the doctor, and the person must follow them to get to the desired results from gastric balloon operation Some of the instructions are:

  1. A certain diet is recommended to be followed after the gastric balloon operation.
  2. Drink plenty of water before and after meals when the gastric balloon has been entered into the stomach.
  3. Continue to avoid smoking, at least during the period when the gastric balloon has been entered into the stomach.
  4. Get the necessary painkillers which were dictated by the doctor in case of discomfort. 
  5. Avoid carrying heavy objects or doing hard work during the period when the gastric balloon has been entered into the stomach. 

Stages of Gastric Balloon Operation

Gastric balloon operation is performed through some simple steps and stages, which are as follows:

First Stage: Clinical Examination

The doctor examines excess fat masses and determines how much fat mass should be reduced. He also identifies the results which are desired by the person who is due to undergo a gastric balloon operation.

Second Stage: Patient Preparation

The medical staff prepares the patient for the gastric balloon operation. The anesthesiologist also anesthetizes the patient with local anesthesia. The patient may also have a sedative that helps them relax during the gastric balloon operation.

Third Stage: Insertion of the Gastric Balloon

If the procedure is conducted with Orbera or Reshape method, the doctor enters the gastric balloon through the mouth with the endoscope. The capsules are entered when the procedure is conducted with the Obalon method.

Fourth Stage: Filling the Balloon

If the procedure is conducted with the Orbera or Reshape method where the balloon is filled with saline. If the procedure is conducted with the Obalon method, the balloon is filled with nitrogen gas.

The balloon is left in the stomach for six to nine months. The patient continues his/her regular life during that period. Then they come back to remove the balloon.

The balloon is a foreign body and cannot stay in your stomach forever. The studies show that after 6 months, the chance of infection increases substantially, putting you at risk for infection. The cost of the whole program includes balloon removal and the anesthesia associated with the second procedure. You CAN NOT keep a balloon for longer than 6 months.
